in other matters

so to get my mind off of things i went out thursday night, down to kevin's night at embers. it didn't really help, i showed up early and i didn't know any of the scattered customers. the music didn't help much either. for a night that's supposed to be all modern goth/industrial, i'd say at least a third of the songs i heard were from the 90s.

in fact, what the night really sounded like was exactly the kind of sets i was performing eight years ago, only not mixed for shit. this is something that has weighed on my mind over the years, the acute awareness of my musical taste being 'too modern' for the portland club scene. i really don't know what to do about it. 'dumbing' it down and pandering to the crowd always struck me as the worst sort of elitist condensending attitude.

i guess i have no choice but to play from my heart and hope that enough people come along for the ride.

do you think that other DJ's dumb it down for the crowd? i'm asking because i feel that there are 2 ways to look at it 1) they dumb it down or 2) they don't know newer stuff.

also, do you think its the dj dumbing it down or the crowd being dumb about the music?

it'd be cool if you started explaining in lj.

wouldn't it be cool if you had a website where you mixed music and had a blurb about the artist(s)included and why they're important to the scene and your theories about the music. it could be a combo music & information site. you've been around the scene and so you can see the connections, styles and changes through the years. you're have a wealth of information that i know people would enjoy learning from. and you rock. :)
